Library
If this is a library, where are all the books? When you think of a library, you probably think of books and quiet spaces. At the SLC, we have a new vision of what a library of the future can be. The SLC is a collaborative learning environment and electronic teaching library. Here, you'll go to class, meet with your friends, work on group projects, study, do research and work on your assignments all in one place! The emphasis is on learning and collaboration and providing you with the tools to make that happen.
Workstations
There are over 500 PC workstations available in the SLC. Do your research, work on your paper or study with a friend -- the workstations are loaded with software and research sources, including access to GIL and GALILEO. See Technology for software details.
Library Research Sources
We might not have lots of books like a traditional library, but you will have access to:
- Over 30,000 full text online journalsNearly 37,000 full text online books GIL, the UGA Libraries catalog and course reservesGALILEO, access over 300 databases to find journal and magazine articles, online dictionaries, encyclopedias and more
- and library staff right here to help you!
Group study rooms
96 group study rooms provide private areas for collaborative work, study sessions, preparation for presentations and projects, and breakout areas where faculty will meet with smaller groups of students. Group study rooms are equipped with a conference table, chairs, white board, bulletin strip, data ports and electrical outlets. There are 16 group study rooms on the 2nd floor, 29 on the 3rd floor, and 51 on the 4th floor.
The rooms are designed for collaborative work sessions. Groups have priority over individual study. Single occupants may be asked to vacate for a larger group.
Reading Room
You may also wish to study in the beautiful wood-panelled Reading Room on the third floor. Soft seating, desks and walls of books create the warm atmosphere of a traditional library reading room. The Reading Room, intended as a quiet escape from buzz of the virtual library, is a computer-free zone.
General study space
The entire building inside and out is designed to promote research and study. You will find comfortable study spaces throughout the building.
Quiet study space
The Reading Room on the 3rd Floor and enitre 4th Floor East and West Wings are designated Quiet Study spaces. Please keep noise to a minimum and turn off cell phones when studying in these areas.
